Sleeping on Weekends is good for your health. Is it true?

We all are aware of the fact that sleep has a big role to play in our lives – we actually spend around a third of our lives sleeping. We and the mattress experts know that having the right amount of sleep can be the difference between having a great day or a bad one.

That feeling of an all nighter leaves us exhausted or feeling muzzy after sleeping long into the afternoon past the recommended 7-8 hour time frame. We have all been there and neither one is ideal. However, many university students have attempted compensating for a lack of sleep by making up for it on less busier days, in particular weekends. It’s very appealing but is sleeping on the weekends actually a good idea? Is it actually a healthy thing to do? Some universities tested this and found some interesting results.

Based on the survey responses for individuals over a 13 year period, the findings showed that having longer sleep on weekends may make up for some of the sleep deficit you may have during weekdays.

In their study, the researchers state the results imply that short sleep is not a risk factor for mortality if it is combined with a medium or long weekend sleep. This implies that it is fine to sleep a little bit longer on weekends without any negative long-term effects.

Don’t use this is an excuse to mess up your body clock.

The results on sleep duration in terms of sufficient or insufficient recovery is however, conjectural. Hence, more research needs to be done in order to support these findings. Put this in comparison with other studies showing that a regular sleep pattern is much healthier than an irregular one.

You cannot expect to stay awake and energised with a little amount of sleep every day after having a large amount of sleep one night. It’s extremely important for you to get a regular amount of sleep each day throughout the week. You can sleep once in a while after a busy week but remember, the best is to have a healthy sleep pattern your body is able to get used to.
